Alvarez forestal

An example of circular economy

The first company in the Armando Alvarez Group was created in the 50s in Torrelavega (Cantabria), with a small carpentry shop and purchase of timber by growing stock volume, which grew to become what we know today as Alvarez Forestal

About Alvarez Forestal

This company currently manages in a sustainable way a forest area of close to 3,500 hectares, mostly its own property

Its activity, based on sustainable management and a circular economy model, follows a zero-waste model. The group of activities they carry out positively impacts the environment and contributes to reducing climate change.

BENEFITS OF
ALVAREZ FORESTAL ACTIVITIES

for the environment and for society

CO₂ absorption from the atmosphere
Air purification, by trees producing O₂
Wildfire control
Prevention of ground erosion and desertification
Soil fertilisation
Revival of rural areas
Enrichment of the local flora and fauna
Renewable source of raw materials
Generation of renewable energy from forestry waste biomass

WE ARE
CARBON NEUTRAL IN 2020

Thanks to the plantations managed by Alvarez Forestal, in 2020 we absorbed more tonnes than we emitted, which allows the Armando Alvarez Group to offset 100% of our emissions, and to obtain the AENOR carbon-neutral certification for 2020.

WHAT DOES
ALVAREZ FORESTAL DO?

1

REFORESTATION

We plant 1,000 trees every day

After a preliminary survey of the ground, we do the necessary work to prepare the soil, plant, fertilise, etc., exceeding 300,000 new plants every year. This allows us to contribute to reducing environmental pollution and to fighting climate change.

2

LAND MAINTENANCE

Clearing to prevent wildfires

We keep the vegetation in check on large swathes of land to keep the track clean and to reduce the risk of potential wildfire, as well as to contain the spread of fire.

3

REUSING

We work under a zero-waste model

When it is time to cut the trees, we use the wood mainly for the paste-paper industry (strategic sector). On the other hand, the waste generated during the cutting, known as waste biomass, is collected and taken from the mountain to the Biomasa de Cantabria plant, a company belonging to the Armando Alvarez Group, to be used as a renewable energy source.

4

CARBON FOOTPRINT OFFSETTING

We absorb over 24,000 tonnes of CO₂

Alvarez Forestal absorbs many more tonnes of CO₂ than we generate within the Armando Alvarez Group, and we can help other companies to offset their carbon footprint.

The sustainable forestry management certifications held by Alvarez Forestal are included within the best practises of the United Nations Global Compact, which promotes Sustainable Development and Corporate Social Responsibility.
